There is no purpose which art serves, nor any which it is intended to serve.

Art plays and is meant to play an enormous diversity of roles in human life. Works of art are instruments by which we perform such diverse actions as praising our great men and expressing our grief, evoking emotion and communicating knowledge. Words of art are objects of such actions as contemplation for the sake of delight. Works of art are accompaniments for such actions as hoeing cotton and rocking infants. Works of art are background for such actions as eating meals and walking through airports.
Works of art equip us for action. And the range of actions for which they equip us is very nearly as broad as the range of human action itself. The purposes of art are the purposes of life. To envisage human existence without art is not to envisage human existence. Art-- so often thought of as a way of getting out of the world -- is man’s way of acting in the world. Artistically man acts.”
-Nicholas Wolterstorff, Art in Action

"There's one big difference between the athlete's zone and the artist's zone...Let's look at Michael Jordan in his later prime - let's say his last season with the Bulls, when they once again won the world championship. When Michael received a pass at the top of the key in full flight and he left the ground, he defied gravity, floated through the air, let that ball roll off his fingertips and into the basket. Tongue unconciously extended. When he did that he had to be in the zone. He could not be thinking about what he was doing.
But to make his zone exactly analogous to the art zone, you have to add this: everytime he shoots, in order to make a basket Michael Jordan would have to confront, without flinching, the moment when his father's chest was blown apart by the shotgun held by his kidnapper. You know that happened in Michael Jordan's life. Well, Michael would have to confront that in order to make a basket everytime. Without flinching. Now his zone is equal to the artist's zone." -Robert Olen Butler, From Where You Dream

A Magical, Strange, Beautiful, Maddening, Surreal Nightmare: The Birth of a Global Empire
"Pure Imagination"
Josh Groban
Mom and I saw Josh Groban perform this song with the Atlanta Symphony behind him under a full moon and all I can say is it was magic to share that experience with her. That trip is one of the greatest treasures of my life. The trip to Atlanta also birthed the idea for the christmas gift I gave mom the year before she died. She actually met Josh Groban with my dad on the christmas gift trip I gave her, a week before her death. It's all been a magical, strange, surreal nightmare.
